Summer Church trace their origin to 1993, when Dick Walker (fiddle) enlisted Christian musicians Tom Macomber (banjo) and Wes Knox (guitar) to achieve his goal of witnessing to non-Christian studio musicians by inviting their help in recording a gospel CD. Dick’s vision was to expose these musicians to Jesus by having them assist on Spirit-filled songs, and “let the music do the talking.”
Their efforts resulted in the 1994 release of Summer Church: Gospel Songs for Fiddle and Banjo which became the first recording ever released by Walkin’ on Water Records. Initially distributed by Chapel Music, this CD was an international best seller. Faced with a request late in 1994 by the Chapel Music management team to perform songs from the CD, the three musicians approached Christian musician Pete Lorentz (bass) and the band Summer Church was formed.
Their follow-up CD, titled Walkin’ on Water, was released in 1996. Blessed by even more success than the first, its instrumental version of Church in the Wildwood became an international radio hit.
Heaven's Front Door was released in 1999 and featured new member Vidal Hulbert on fiddle. This CD debuted six new songs written by the band. Former Kentucky Colonel LeRoy Mack guested on resonator guitar. This CD features some of Summer Church's best work and continues to receive airplay throughout north America.
A Compilation, featuring some of the best tracks from the first two CDs, Summer Church and Walkin' on Water, plus 3 previously unreleased songs, was released in 2003.
Based out of southern California, Summer Church continues to delight audiences across the nation with their unique blend of gospel, swing, blues, country and bluegrass music. They will release a CD of all new music during the summer of 2008.
